What is Bio-Gas?
Bio-gas is the product of anaerobic decomposition by microbes in putrescible organic material. These microbes feed off carbohydrates and fats, producing methane and carbon dioxides as metabolic waste products. Bio-gas consists of primarily methane (the source of energy within the fuel) and carbon dioxide. Bio-gas may also contain small amounts of nitrogen or hydrogen. Contaminants in the bio-gas can include sulphur or siloxanes, but these contaminants will vary, depending on the organic material being used. This methane gas (bio-gas) can be harnessed for a reliable source of sustainable energy.
Martin Energy Group offers a wide variety of engines specifically designed to operate on different types of bio-gas fuels. These bio-gas engines are coupled to a generator and produce electricity at maximum efficiencies. High efficiency production of electricity enables the end user to maximize the electrical output from the bio-gas and optimize the economic performance of renewable and sustainable energy.
Biologically-derived gases can be utilized in bio-gas engines to generate renewable power via co-generation in the form of electricity and heat. The electricity can be used to power the plant or to provide on-site power. The power can also be exported to the national grid for sale. Low temperature heat from the cooling circuits of the bio-gas engine can be used to heat the organic material in the digester or for any other process where heat may be needed. High temperature heat from the exhaust gas can be converted into hot water using a shell & tube exhaust gas heat exchanger to supplement the heat from the engine cooling system. Waste heat boilers can be implemented to produce steam for industrial processes or to drive an absorption chiller for cooling, converting the system to a tri-generation plant.
