Rockwood Dairy, Granville, MA – Hampden County- Manure generated by the small herd could not power the farm’s 450 kW system alone. The anaerobic digester system takes in landfill food waste and converts it into fuel and fertilizer. In recent years, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) implemented a ban on disposal of commercial organic wastes in landfills. This dairy digester system plays an important role for the recycling of these wastes.
Benefits:
The farm is producing enough electricity to power its entire operation and millions of excess KWhs to put back on the public grid for local use equivalent to powering 320 homes.
Rockwood Dairy digester goals include:
• Recycle 15 tons of manure generated per day
• Recycle 20,000 tons of food waste per year
• Generate 3.5 Million kW hour of electricity per year
• Reduce Millions of tons of CO2 emissions.
The project was funded in part with grants from Massachusetts CEC and USDA-NRCS. Additionally, the farm formed a business partnership with Ag-Grid Energy LLC to co-develop and co-finance the project.
